The University of Alabama softball family has grown by two after the early signings of standout prep players Alex Blewitt and Charlotte Morgan.
Blewitt, from Archbald, Pennsylvania, is a power-hitting third baseman with a strong arm. Despite being from Pennsylvania, Blewitt already had ties to the Capstone as her brother is currently a student at Alabama.
Blewitt earned all-star honors in the Lackawanna League as well as being named All-Region her sophomore and junior years. She helped lead her team to the district championship in the 2004 and 2005 seasons as well as the state playoffs in 2005.
“We hope Alex is as consistent as our previous third basemen,” said head coach Patrick Murphy. “She has a strong arm and a ton of potential. She was a great fit for us.”
Morgan, from Moreno Valley, California, became the first Californian to sign a national letter of intent with Alabama. She’s a left handed pitcher and a right-handed hitter who hits with power evidenced by her four home runs at the Gold Nationals tournament this summer. She has been a first and second team All-League performer her past three years in high school.
Morgan is as accomplished in the classroom as well being named to the National Honor Society three consecutive years as well as being a Scholar Athlete all throughout her high school career.
“Charlotte is probably one of the most highly recruited kids we’ve ever signed,” said Murphy. “We identified her three years ago and as luck would have it we got her.
“Both are going to be power hitters. We added speed this year and we’re going to have to replace three very good hitters next year in Dom (Accetturo), Staci (Ramsey) and Steph (VanBrakle), so we had to have hitters. Hopefully they’ll both come in and contribute a lot right away. As a tandem, they’re as good as we’ve ever had, but we’ll see in four years.”
The Crimson Tide will open the 2006 season in February when the team hosts the Bama Bash! February 10-12. For ticket information, contact the Alabama Ticket Office at 205.348.2262.
