LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- Robin Stephenson advanced to the quarterfinals of the Riviera/ITA All-Americans Friday morning before losing to No. 10-ranked Alice Barnes of Stanford.
Stephenson defeated Marianna Yuferova in straight sets for her second win of the Championships. Her second round victory advanced her further into the field at the All-Americans than any other Crimson Tide player in the history of the event.
“It was a sweet feeling,” Stephenson said. “This is a great tournament and I feel like I played well here to start the year. To get to the quarterfinals in a national tournament is a big step for me. I had a good run.”
Not only did Stephenson set another Alabama record at the Championships, but she got herself past the second round of a national event for the first time in her collegiate career. Stephenson had previously lost in the first round in each of her last two Grand Slam events and was defeated in the second round of last year’s Riviera/ITA All-Americans.
“I lost a tough one today to a very good player,” Stephenson said. “Everyone here is really good. Every year I come out to win the tournament and each year I’ve gotten better and better. Hopefully it will be indicative about my season.”
