The University of Alabama volleyball team was unable to pull its second upset of the weekend, falling to the Arkansas Lady'Backs 3-2 (30-24, 24-30, 19-30, 30-25, 11-15) Sunday afternoon at the CAVE. The Tide, which defeated No. 24 LSU Friday night, fell to 14-3 on the season, 2-2 in the Southeastern Conference. Arkansas improved to 10-5 overall, 3-1 in the SEC.
Alabama managed to out kill Arkansas 72-56 on the day, however the Tide had 42 hitting errors, while the Lady'Backs committed only 20 and out hit Alabama .240-.170.
"That's the bottom line of the match right there, 42 errors to 20 errors," Alabama head coach Judy Green said. "You have to give Arkansas credit though. They had 19 blocks in five games and that is a pretty stout performance at the net."
Freshman Lindsey Buteyn was a bright spot for Alabama. In just her second career start, the Waupun, Wis. native lead the Tide with a .321 hitting percentage and posted a career high 15 kills.
"She certainly made a case for why she should be on the floor," Green said. "She is a competitor. The main thing is, she played against two top forty teams in the country this weekend and she had two very strong performances. I am very excited because it gives us another dimension in the middle.
Sophomore Crystal Hudson had a match high 16 kills and freshman Sarah Snider added 14. Senior Jessica Yearout had a match best 21 digs for Alabama.
Amy Allison and Denitza Koleva paced the Lady'Backs. Allison had a double-double with 12 kills and 14 blocks and slugged .550 for the match. Koleva had 14 kills and eight blocks.
The Tide hits the road next weekend, traveling to Ole Miss on Friday night and Mississippi State Sunday afternoon. First serve for Friday's match is set for 6:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SEC-TV.
