MEMPHIS, TENN. – Alabama’s Joseph Jung continued to roll Saturday with a pair of wins at the ITA Southern Regional Indoor Championships. Jung is one of eight players remaining and will now play Sunday in the quarterfinals.
Each of Jung’s wins came in long, three-set matches. In his first match of the day, Jung defeated Juan Pablo Di Cesare of Ole Miss in a match that lasted over three hours. The two opponents split the first two sets before Jung clinched the victory in a third-set tiebreak.
Jung’s second win of the day, over Martin Stiegwardt, lasted nearly three hours. Stiegwardt took the opening set, but Jung bounced back to win the final two sets 6-2, 6-2 and advance to the quarterfinals.
“I’m proud of Joe’s effort today,” Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. “We talked to him about increasing his intensity and he did that today.”
On top of Jung’s singles performance, he played another marathon doubles match. He and partner Andrew Felsenthal took James Cluskey and Ken Skupski of LSU to a tiebreaker, but fell 9-8.
Jung now needs two wins to clinch a spot in Monday’s final and also earn an automatic berth into the ITA Indoor National Championships. Both the quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Sunday.
