TUSCALOOSA - After posting an impressive 9-4 record in non-conference play, the University of Alabama women's basketball team turns its attention to the second part of the season - Southeastern Conference play - starting on Sunday when the Tide hosts Kentucky at 2 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum.
The Tide looks to bounce back after a hard-fought 86-83 loss to South Dakota State on Wednesday night. The loss snapped UA's five game home win streak and also halted a 15-game win streak for Bama when they scored 80 or more points. Alabama has been solid after losses this year, posting a victory each time after a loss.
Kentucky brings an 11-4 record into the meeting after handing Longwood a 79-41 loss on Tuesday. The Wildcats have won seven of their last eight games including a current three-game win streak. Sunday's game marks the third time in the last four seasons that Alabama has opened SEC play against Kentucky, with UK posting victories in the previous two openers. Kentucky owns a 15-14 edge in the all-time series with Alabama including wins in six of the last seven contests. In the last 10 games between the two squads, neither squad has earned a win by more than seven points.
Alabama is 8-17 all-time in SEC openers having snapped a six-game losing skid in league debuts with a win over South Carolina last year. Coach Rick Moody has guided the Tide to a 4-11 SEC opening mark.
Sports Radio 1420 AM "The Tusk" as well as New Rock 90.7 FM (WVUA) will both be broadcasting Sunday's game live on the radio. Fans can also follow the action on simulcast and live statistics via the internet at www.rolltide.com.
Following the Kentucky game, Alabama heads out of town for a pair of challenging SEC road contests next week when the Tide takes on Mississippi State on Jan. 13 and plays at top-ranked LSU next Sunday (Jan. 16). The Tide's next home game will be Jan. 20 against South Carolina.
