Grand Slammers and Baseball Team Hold Annual Fan Day

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- University of Alabama head baseball coach Jim Wells and the Crimson Tide baseball team welcomed nearly 300 fans to the 22nd annual Alabama Grand Slammers preseason barbecue held in the Scholarship Room at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Alabama Grand Slammers President Ron Hughston was pleased with the turnout and said the organization is excited about the start of a new season.
"We all had a good time," Hughston said. "Everyone was excited to meet the team and is excited about the start of the season. The purpose of this event is to meet Coach Wells and the team. We all had a great day."
The event included a barbecue lunch and an autograph session with the 2005 baseball squad. Afterwards, Coach Wells addressed the group and introduced the Crimson Tide and thanked the Grand Slammers for their support.
"This marks the official beginning to baseball season," Well said. "While the team has been working hard for the past two weeks, the Grand Slammers barbecue has always marked the official beginning of the season.
"This is a great event for not only the fans, but for our team. We certainly enjoy this and are greatful to the Grand Slammers for their hard work on this event and their continued support."
In addition to door prizes, the Grand Slammers also had a silent auction and some of the items won on Sunday included a Jim Wells signed Alabama batting helmet, a Jim Wells signed Alabama baseball jersey, a Lance Cormier signed game-used bat from the Arizona Diamondbacks and an Yogi Berra signed baseball.
Alabama will open the season in less than two weeks as they begin a four-game series against the University of Hawai'i in Honolulu. The season opener is Thursday, Feb. 10 at 10:35 p.m. (CT). All four games in Hawai'i will be aired on the Crimson Tide Sports Network and will also be available through ough www. rolltide.com and www.broadcast.com.
The 2005 home opener is set for Friday, Feb. 18 against UNC Asheville at 6:30 p.m.
