RJ Murray is Alabama’s lone senior and team captain in 2005. He transferred to Alabama last season after playing two seasons at N.C. State. Murray will lead the Crimson Tide into action this weekend as Alabama Tennis opens up the 2005 season with four matches in three days beginning Friday at 1 p.m. against Birmingham-Southern. But before he straps up the shoes to begin the season, Murray had to play a little Serve and Volley.
The Serve: Are you superstitious at all?
The Volley: Oh yeah, I’m real superstitious.
S: What kind of superstitions do you have?
V: I have a lot of them, colors, the way I walk around the court. I always walk around the court in patterns. I never play a point with a ball I just lost a point with. I don’t use red score cards if it can be avoided. I probably lost one match using a red scorecard and said ‘Okay, I’m not doing that again.’
S: Are you a fan of trash talk?
V: Definitely. I think it’s good to get loud and get into the opponents head.
S: What’s the best line of trash talk anyone has ever said to you?
V: Well, I can’t use profanity here can I? I’ve had quite a few players call me quite a few names. Is that good enough?
S: If you could play doubles with one professional tennis player, who would you choose?
V: Anna Kournikova.
S: What is your most memorable tennis moment?
V: Winning my high school regional championships in the deciding doubles match with my brother after being down five match points in the last match and knowing are school was going to be shut down after that year because our headmaster had been diagnosed with Parkinson's.
S: For all the kids out there, what’s your best piece of advice for them?
V: Just have fun! If you enjoy playing tennis and you have fun with it and work at it then you can end up anywhere you want to.
S: Where would you rather play, indoors or outdoors?
V: Outdoors, definitely.
S: Clay court or hard-court?
V: Grass.
S: Super Bowl pick?
V: Patriots. The Eagles beat my Buccaneers a couple of years ago.
