After a standout performance last weekend, the Alabama women's track and field team is looking to keep things rolling along at this weekend's Clemson Invitational.
Alabama earned two NCAA provisional qualifying marks at the Kentucky Invitational last weekend and junior All-American Beth Mallory set a new school record in the weight throw.
The Tide will get things underway at 5 p.m. EST on Friday (Jan. 21). This will be Alabama's second trip to Clemson in two months. Head coach Sandy Fowler's crew traveled there for the Clemson Opener in early December to get the season underway. The earlier than usual start could be one of the factors in the Tide's fast start.
In addition to Mallory's record and NCAA standard and junior Beau Walker's NCAA cut in the 60m hurdles, Alabama saw two athletes set career best marks at Kentucky. Sophomore Julia Hicks was fifth in the 3000m run, crossing the finish line at 9:51.97, a career best time by more than 20 seconds. Sophomore Elizabeth Wancowicz finished sixth in the mile with a career best 5:05.03.
This weekend, Mallory will again compete in the weight, along with senior Chafree Bain and freshman Lorna Finn. Bain and Finn will also throw the shot for the Tide.
Walker, senior Tasha Pharr and sophomores Rachel Wilson and Kendall Clifford will compete in the 60m hurdles. Walker will also run the 60m dash, along with sophomore Jessica Colvin and juniors Tahesia Harrigan and Majik Reed.
Pharr, Kendall and Harrigan will compete in the long jump while Pharr, Harrigan and junior Kou Luogon will compete in the triple jump. Clifford will compete in the high jump.
Colvin, Luogon and Reed will run the 200m dash. Walker, Wilson and Luogon will compete in the 400m while freshman Jen Gray and senior Virnetta Greene will compete in the 800m. Wancowicz, Hicks junior Shannon Flournoy will run the mile, while sophomore Megan Carnes will be the Tide's lone entrant in the 3000m run.
The Tide also plans to put up two 4 x 400m relays and a distance medley relay squad.
