The Alabama women's track and field team earned two NCAA provisional qualifying marks today at the Kentucky Indoor Invitational in Lexington.
Junior All-American Beth Mallory bettered her own school record by half a foot in the weight throw, winning the event with an NCAA provisional mark of 64 feet and 10.50 inches. Senior Chafree Bain took 10th in the weight with a throw of 51-07.
Junior Beau Walker also bettered an NCAA provisional qualifying standard, turning in a time of 8.28 in the 60m hurdles on her way to a second place finish. Walker also took third in the 60m dash with a 7.56 followed by junior Majik Reed's ninth place 7.67.
"We're way ahead of where we were at this point last year," head coach Sandy Fowler said. "I'm very proud of our effort here this weekend. This puts us in very good shape going into the rest of the season. I think this says a lot about how competitive we'll be down the road, in the SEC meet."
Sophomore Julia Hicks was fifth in the 3000m run, crossing the finish line at 9:51.97, a career best time by more than 20 seconds. Sophomore Elizabeth Wancowicz finished sixth in the mile with a career best 5:05.03 while senior Christy Fairley was sixth in the 400m dash with a 56.54. Bain took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 44-00, just short of her career best.
The Tide returns to action next weekend at the Clemson Invitational.
