This week the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its first national rankings of 2005 and the Alabama men’s tennis team earned a No. 37 ranking. Two Crimson Tide players earned individual rankings as well.
Sophomore Luigi D’Agord made quite a splash in this week’s rankings as he garnered a No. 31 national ranking, the fifth highest debut in the ITA rankings of 2005 and the ninth highest debut in the last four years. D’Agord went 17-4 this fall and defeated six nationally ranked opponents. He is already halfway to John Stimpson’s single-season wins record of 34.
Alabama’s Joseph Jung also appeared in the ITA rankings at No. 91. Jung, just a sophomore, led the Tide in wins in 2003 with 23 and was 8-4 this fall.
“It’s good to get recognition early in the season,” said head coach Billy Pate. “Luigi is very deserving of such a high debut and Joseph has played well too. We know that we need to win though and the rankings that matter most are where we end up and not where we begin.”
Alabama will start the 2005 season with four matches in three days when it plays host to Birmingham-Southern and Central Florida on Friday, January 28 and then Furman and Troy on Sunday, January 30.
