The University of Alabama soccer team and head coach Don Staley has named seniors Allison DeLisle, Cally Morrill and junior Emily Pitek as team captains for the 2005 season.
The trio combined for 13 points in 2004 while guiding Alabama to its first post-season berth since 1998. Staley feels their leadership abilities on and off the field exemplify the work ethic that he expects from his team.
“I’m excited about the leadership that these girls bring to this team,” Staley said. “They have shown a desire to lead and take this team to the next level. They will serve as a great example to our incoming freshmen and the rest of the team as we head towards our spring season.”
DeLisle started 15 of the Tide’s 21 games in 2004 and scored three goals, two assists and had eight points. She was a staple for Alabama at midfield totaling more than 1,500 minutes on the season, fifth on the team. She was also named to the 2004 Academic All-District Team.
“DeLisle is everything I like to see in a captain,” Staley said. “She is a leader by example, both on and off the field and is always the first to speak up to encourage a teammate.”
Morrill started all 21 games in 2004 and has started 56 games in her career at Alabama. She was second on the team in minutes played at 1,692 and puts tremendous pressure on the opposing goalkeeper as she led the team in shots-on-goal with 17.
“Cally has a great workman-like attitude,” Staley said. “She will never be outworked in anything she does.”
Pitek will be the youngest of the three captains. The junior defender started 18 games in 2004, but her brightest moment came on October 8, 2004 when she scored her first career goal off a penalty kick to defeat Ole Miss in overtime.
“Pitek is full of Crimson Spirit,” Staley said. “She plays with more enthusiasm than anyone I know and supports the entire athletic department. When she isn’t on the soccer field or studying you can find her at a number of Alabama sporting events.”
Alabama will kick-off its spring schedule on February 25 in Germantown, Tenn. and will play through April 24 when the spring season culminates in Orange Beach, Ala at the Orange Beach Soccer Classic against UAB.
