TUSCALOOSA – Following a day off from practice on Wednesday, University of Alabama volleyball coach Judy Green still had a smile on her face when thinking about what she saw from her team at Tuesday night’s Crimson-White scrimmage in the CAVE.
The two squads squared off in a pair of 30-point games followed by a pair of 15-point games. The Crimson team posted 30-24 and 30-22 wins before watching the White team rally for 15-9 and 15-11 victories. Green was pleased with the overall performance of her squad but one area really stood out to her.
“From a defensive standpoint we are certainly a much improved team,” said Green, entering her ninth-year at the helm of the Crimson Tide program. “There seems to be a good relationship between our block and our back court defense. In order to be a highly competitive team we must be able to dig balls and we are doing that right now. I also felt our passing took a turn for the better. We passed a 2.11 for the scrimmage and that was an improvement from the day before. All of the players seem to be more comfortable in our systems. We are very close to being ready to play our season opener on Wednesday.”
The Crimson squad consisted of outside hitters Erin Heffner and Crystal Hudson, middle blockers Julie Farley and Rachael Green, opposite hitter Kelley Potter and setters Brigitte Slack and Megan Hudson. Jessica Yearout filled the libero spot for the team with Kory Tull seeing time as a defensive specialist.
The White team featured freshman Bridget Fuentez, sophomores Katie Barker, Abbi Blackburn and Mary Beth Moore. Assistant coaches Chris Redding and Erich Hinterstocker rounded out the scrimmage line-up.
Alabama has now turned its attention to the start of the regular season. UA hosts NCAA Tournament participant Alabama A&M on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. in their season and home opener for 2004. The Tide also hosts the Crimson Tide Invitational on Sept. 3-4. All Bama home volleyball matches are free to the public and played in the CAVE at the back of Coleman Coliseum.
