TUSCALOOSA – University of Alabama head women’s basketball coach Rick Moody announced the addition of Quentin Hillsman as an assistant coach to his Crimson Tide staff for the upcoming season.
Hillsman, a native of Suitland, Md., joins the Alabama staff after serving as the head coach at The Patterson School in Lenoir, N.C., last season. He takes the coaching position of C.C. Moorer, who moved over to the role of Director of Basketball Operations after former director Dan Cranford left to taking a prep coaching position at Holy Spirit.
“I’m thrilled to be adding ‘Q’ to my staff,” said Moody. “I’ve gotten to know him the last couple of years out on the recruiting trails and I have been extremely impressed by him. He is a real go-getter that understands the game of basketball and has proven himself the last few years as a head coach. I think that he’s an outstanding addition to our staff and the Alabama program.”
In his only season at Patterson, Hillsman revived a program that was dormant for 10 years and guided them to a 26-1 record and a national championship among girl’s prep schools. Prior to his season at Patterson, he spent two seasons as the head coach at Laurinburg (N.C.) Institute leading them to a national prep school championship in 2002 with a perfect 22-0 record.
“It is a tremendous honor for me to have the opportunity to coach at a school like Alabama with a coaching legend like Rick Moody,” said Hillsman. “I have the utmost respect for Coach Moody and his staff and the success they have had here. I’m looking forward to learning everything I can from him. Alabama is a tradition rich program that plays in the best and most competitive league in the country. I’m excited about the challenges and looking forward to being a part of the Crimson Tide women’s basketball family.”
In addition to his experience as a prep school head coach, Hillsman also spent several seasons as a collegiate assistant coach for programs including American University, Siena College and his alma mater, St. Mary’s College (Md.). He helped guide Siena to a conference regular season and tournament championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. His coaching career also included a stint at The Newport School, where he coached the boy’s and girl’s programs.
A 1993 graduate of St. Mary’s College, Hillsman had a stellar four-year playing career that saw him guide the Seahawks to a pair of CAC Conference titles. As a player, he garnered all-conference accolades and established the school’s single season and single game assist records. Hillsman also studied Sports Management at the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Ala., from 1994-96.
