Tide Basketball Assistant Philip Pearson Will Host Camp in Montgomery

TUSCALOOSA – Montgomery native Philip Pearson will return to his hometown to host the annual Philip Pearson Basketball Camp. The University of Alabama assistant has helped coach the Crimson Tide to three NCAA and two NIT postseason appearances since the 1999 season, including the 2004 NCAA Elite Eight.
The camp will be held August 2-5 at the Bell Road YMCA in Montgomery. It is open to boys and girls in grades one through twelve. Cost is $80 for any YMCA member (including members of YMCA's other than the Bell Road YMCA) and $85 for non-members. The camp fee is due at the time of registration, but advance registration is encouraged. The camp is divided into two sessions. Grades one through six attend a morning session from 8:30 a.m. CT until 11:45 a.m. each day. Campers in grades seven through 12 attend an afternoon session from 1:15 p.m. until 4:30 p .m. CT.
Pearson prepped at Montgomery's Jeff Davis High School and played collegiately for the University of Alabama. While he was an Alabama player, the Tide advanced to the NCAA tournament four times, including two Sweet 16 appearances. Pearson and his Tide teammates won two Southeastern Conference tournament championships. Pearson's experience as an assistant coach started with Wimp Sanderson at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. Mark Gottfried hired him as his assistant at Murray State in 1995, and during their three year tenure, the Racers advanced to the NCAA tournament twice and the NIT once. He was the first hire Gottfried announced when Gottfried became Alabama's head coach in March 1998. Pearson has coached or played with 13 NBA players during his coaching and playing careers, including some of the NBA's biggest names like Robert Horry, Latrell Sprewell and Antonio McDyess.
