TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama’s No. 1 singles player Stephen Mitchell found out his season would be just a bit longer than his teammates this afternoon when he was selected to participate in the NCAA individual singles championship tournament.
Mitchell, a senior from Capetown, South Africa, has been a four-year singles and doubles player at the top of the Crimson Tide’s lineup, and was the team’s captain in 2004. He will graduate on Monday (in three and a half years) and lead Alabama into battle in the NCAA team championships beginning on Friday, when the Tide faces Texas A&M.
Mitchell is ranked 42nd in the nation in singles play with a 21-13 overall singles record in 2003-2004. The NCAA singles and doubles individual championships will be held in Tulsa, Okla. beginning on Wednesday, May 26, one day after the completion of the team championships.
Draws for the individual tournament will be released as play nears.
