Despite its youth, the University of Alabama men’s track and field team is looking to make some noise this weekend at the NCAA Mideast Region Championships in Baton Rouge, La., as the team travels eight athletes to compete in six events, all looking for a spot in the NCAA Championships to be held in June at the University of Texas.
Sophomore Byron Gibson will lead the charge competing in both the 110-meter hurdles and 4x100m relay. Gibson posted a season and personal best time of 14.15 in the 110m hurdles at the Sun Angel Classic.
Peter Etoot will be competing in the 800m having posted a season and personal best time of 1:46.97, also at the Sun Angel Classic.
Todd Fayant will be looking to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships in the 3k Steeplechase. His top time this season came at the Stanford Invitational where he posted a time of 8:58.87.
Gabe Warren will represent the Crimson Tide in the high jump after posting an NCAA Region qualifying mark of 6’10.75” at the Drake Relays.
Perhaps the most pleasant surprise of the season has been the consistent performance of freshman Steven Boozer in the discus. Boozer has posted five qualifying marks, with the top mark being 184.04” at the USF Invitational. It currently stands as the fifth farthest throw in the discus in school history.
The Tide’s 4x100m relay team will also be competing after posting a qualifying time of 40.63 at the USF Invitational. The team consists of Marcus Siwemuke, Lem Clayborn, Chauncey Harris and Byron Gibson. However, due to a recent injury, Harris will not be participating this weekend for Alabama and Roland Burks will be taking his spot in the relay.
The meet is schedule to begin on Friday at 12:00 p.m. with the men’s high jump and will wrap up on Saturday at approximately 8:15 p.m. with the men’s 4x400m relay.
