
Brovold Shoots Six Over Par in NCAA Regional 1st Round

NEW HAVEN, CT. – Fog delayed by an hour Thursday’s start of the 2004 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf East Regional where University of Alabama golfer Lars Brovold is the top seed of six individuals competing for two spots to advance to the NCAA team finals.
Day one would prove to be a disappointment for Brovold who shot 76 and finds himself tied at 72 in the overall standings at six over par on the par 70 Course at Yale. Brovold, a first team All-Southeastern Conference selection, went into the regional with a 71.60 stroke average.
Two individuals competing unattached are ahead of him after first round play as Navy’s Billy Hurley shot even par, 70, and is among a six-way tie for sixth place. South Alabama’s Gareth Maybin is also ahead after carding 73 to place him tied at 29th.
Wake Forest’s Bill Haas and Rhode Island’s Kenneth Fahey, who are both competing with their teams here, share the lead after carding identical round scores of 67. At three under par, they are a stroke ahead of Florida’s Camilo Villegas who shot 68.
Florida leads the field of 27 teams by a stroke against Georgia. The Gators are at six over par after one round, shooting 286 as a team.
The tournament, one of three regionals concurrently playing, continues with the second round on Friday and the final round on Saturday.
