TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -The University of Alabama men’s tennis team evened its record at 10-10 on the season Wednesday, defeating UAB and Birmingham Southern in Tuscaloosa.
The first match of the day, a 6-1 Crimson Tide victory, was played outdoors at the UA Student Rec courts, but the Birmingham Southern match was moved indoors due to inclement weather.
“This was a valuable day for us,” Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. “We were able to even our record and get back on the winning track as we prepare for our nemesis, Auburn.”
Freshman Joseph Jung extended his team-leading singles win streak to five matches Wednesday. Jung had two straight-set victories at No. 2 singles. Alabama’s No 1 singles player Stephen Mitchell also won two singles matches in straight sets. He added two doubles victories on the day as well.
The mid-week double header served as a tune-up for a key SEC showdown between the Tide and rival Tigers set for Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
“Both Alabama and Auburn are trying to emerge for the last part of the SEC season,” Pate said. “There is a lot of tennis left, but Saturday’s match will mean a lot in terms of seeding for the SEC Tournament and will have a great bearing on our NCAA hopes.“
