The University of Alabama women’s soccer team concluded its spring season this past weekend in the right way, defeating the Mississippi State Bulldogs 2-1 in Orange Beach, Alabama home of the SEC Soccer Tournament.
“Once again, everything in Orange Beach was first class in every facet, from the facilities, to the people that took care of us, to the lodgings,” said Alabama Head Coach Don Staley. “That coupled with our performance made everything perfect this weekend.”
Playing with only 12 players due to injuries, the Tide took an early 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal from Gillian Kilburn. The Bulldogs tied it at 1-1 but with approximately two minutes left in the match, Rebecca Baker scored the golden goal for the Tide to secure the win.
Alabama closed out its spring season with a 6-2-1 record, a record which has Coach Staley ecstatic about the start of the ’04 fall schedule.
“I’m excited about the possibilities of this core group, coupled with the incoming freshman,” said Staley. “The way they executed restarts, finished off plays and responded to our outstanding coaching staff just leaves me in anticipation of the fall schedule. All that in addition to our new stadium and I believe there is nothing but good things coming for Alabama soccer this season.”
The Crimson Tide will open the 2004 season in its new home on Friday, August 27 when the team hosts Alabama A&M.
