Coming off its best meet of the outdoor season, the Alabama women’s track and field team is ranked in the nation’s top-25 for the first time this season coming in tied for No. 24.
“This is certainly one of the things we’ve been working toward,” head coach Sandy Fowler said. “We have been getting progressively better each year and we now have a team that I feel confident can make some noise on the national level. This week’s poll is an affirmation of that fact.”
The Crimson Tide shares the No. 24 spot with Kansas State, Oregon, Georgia Tech and conference rival Mississippi State. Alabama has two athletes ranked in the national top-10 in three events. Sophomore Beth Mallory is currently ranked second in the discus while sophomore Beau Walker is ranked in the top-10 in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles.
Alabama won four events at last weekend’s LSU Alumni Gold meet, including Beth Mallory in the discus, Aymara Albury in the shot put, Blair Davis in the 3000m steeplechase and Beau Walker in the 400m hurdles. Going into this weekend’s trip to the prestigious Drake Relays, Alabama has nine athletes qualified in 14 events for the NCAA Region meet.
