BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Alabama women’s golf team posted a final round 312 on Sunday to finish in sixth-place at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic.
The Crimson Tide, who finished with a three-day total of 926, came up just four shots shy of a top five showing in the 17-team event held at the par 72, 6,265-yard University Club of LSU.
“We had a long day today,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “We got a slow start, turned things around a little in the middle then had some rough spots down the stretch. All day long we had trouble finishing. Hopefully, we can learn from this experience. We don’t have much time to get ready since we play again next weekend.”
Junior Darby Sligh, playing with the pain of a sore back, led the way for Bama earning a sixth-place finish after carding a 76 on Sunday. Sligh shot a tournament total 225 (74-75-76). Another UA junior, Megan George, also earned a Top 20 individual finish. George ended the event in a tie for 15th at 228 including a final round 78.
Other golfers competing for Alabama at the LSU Classic included sophomore Carina Sorensen in 41st (75-83-80/238), freshman Amy Middleton in 45th (81-79-80/240) and senior Mandy Tedder in 56th (78-87-78/243). Tide senior Anna Strandberg finished in a tie for 52nd (79-82-81/242) playing as an individual at the event.
North Carolina captured the team crown with a score of 903 that included a tournament low round of 292 on Sunday. Round two leader Tulane finished in second at 906 with host team LSU earning a third-place finish at 913. Ole Miss was fourth at 915 followed by Furman (922), ALABAMA (926), South Carolina (928), UNC-Wilmington (929), Louisville (938), Mississippi State (946), North Carolina State (954), Birmingham Southern (955), Kentucky (983), UAB (983), Augusta State (984), Memphis (1002) and Winthrop (1028).
Alabama gets little rest before returning to the links. The Tide will be home for two days before traveling to Columbia, S.C., on Wednesday to participate in the Lady Gamecock Invitational that starts on Friday.
