BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Alabama women’s golf team had trouble on the greens in second round action of the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic on Saturday, slipping from first to fifth heading into the final round of play.
The Crimson Tide fired a 315 on Saturday for a two-day tournament score of 614. Bama’s second round troubles dropped them out of the overall lead but kept them within 10 shots of the tourney leader Tulane with 18 holes remaining.
“We had a rough day from the very start,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “The weather was perfect so it is a bit disappointing that we couldn’t score a little better. It was a struggle for us all day long especially on the greens where we just didn’t get our putts to fall. I’m still confident that we can bounce back on Sunday and I look forward to us playing another strong round.”
Junior Darby Sligh was the Tide’s top performer on Saturday shooting a two-over-par 74. Sligh is tied for fifth after 36 holes of play with a 149 total. Fellow junior Megan George is also among the Top 10 individuals, sitting in a tie for 7th at 150 following a second round 78.
UA sophomore Carina Sorensen is tied for 38th (158) including an 83 on Saturday, while freshman Amy Middleton posted a 79 to rank tied for 43rd(160). Senior Mandy Tedder rounded out the Bama travel squad in a tie for 63rd (165) with an 87. Tide senior Anna Strandberg shot an 82 playing as an individual and ranks tied for 48th at 151.
Tulane leads the team competition at 604, three shots in front of host LSU (607). Ole Miss is in third at 309 followed by North Carolina (611), ALABAMA (614), UNC-Wilmington (615), Furman (618), South Carolina (626), Louisville (632), Mississippi State (636), North Carolina State (642), Birmingham Southern (643), Augusta State (659), Kentucky (660), UAB (662), Memphis (681) and Winthrop (690).
Tournament action at the LSU Classic concludes with a final round of 18 holes on Sunday at the par 72, 6,256-yard University Club of LSU.
