While the University of Alabama women’s soccer team is conducting its mid-spring workouts, Crimson Tide assistant soccer coach Katie Barnes is involved in a different sort of workout.
Barnes is currently playing with the Washington Freedom of the WUSA league. The Freedom is making an effort to continue to help promote women’s professional soccer and the Women’s United Soccer Association’s.
Barnes, who is currently a member of the US National Pool, was the ninth overall pick (1st pick, 2nd round) in the 2002 WUSA draft by the Carolina Courage and helped lead the team to the regular season championship and the WUSA Founders Cup Championship.
She was then signed by the San Jose CyberRays for the 2003 season and was nominated for the 2003 WUSA All-Star Game.
The Freedom will hold several exhibitions in the spring of 2004, including matches against the University of Louisville (March 26), University of Cincinnati (March 28), and Xavier University (March 28).
