TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Robin Stephenson’s three wins over ranked opponents earned the Crimson Tide sophomore Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors for the second time this season.
The Crimson Tide sophomore highlighted her weekend with a straight-set win over Florida’s Alexis Gordon, the No. 2 ranked player in the country. Stephenson, who is ranked 50th, also scored a singles victory over South Carolina’s No. 54 Danielle Wiggins to clinch a 4-3 victory for Alabama.
Stephenson has beaten the No. 1 and No. 2 players (at the time of the match) in collegiate tennis this year. She earned SEC Player of the Week Honors in week one of conference play after defeating then No. 1 ranked Agata Cioroch of Georgia.
In doubles Stephenson teamed with fellow sophomore Ashley Bentley to upset Florida’s ninth-ranked duo of Gordon and Julie Rotondi, and the pair beat South Carolina’s Wiggins and Laura Ganzer on Friday. Stephenson and Bentley are 6-0 in doubles SEC play and have won their last eight doubles matches.
Bentley has also been red-hot for the Crimson Tide and is undefeated in SEC play. In addition to her six doubles wins with Stephenson, Bentley has notched 12 consecutive singles wins, include a 6-0 mark in league play.
Bentley took down the No. 26 player in the nation on Sunday, Florida’s Jennifer Magley.
No. 28 Alabama (9-5, 4-2 SEC) goes on the road this weekend, facing No. 4 Vanderbilt (15-2, 5-1 SEC) and No. 15 Kentucky (13-7, 4-2 SEC). Updated team and individual rankings will be released on Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
