Alabama senior Lane Bassham and diving coach Pat Greenwell were honored with national awards this weekend at the end of the women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships held on the Texas A&M campus.
Bassham, who won the NCAA three-meter diving title and took second off the one-meter board, was named NCAA Diver of the Meet. Greenwell was named NCAA Diving Coach of the Meet. Greenwell's divers, Bassham and sophomore Crystal Rasmussen, accounted for all 43 of Alabama's points, which propelled the Tide into 21st place.
"This is a tremendous and well deserved honor for both Lane and Pat," head swimming and diving coach Eric McIlquham said. "We couldn't be more proud of them and all they have accomplished, not just at this meet, but throughout the season."
Bassham earned her seventh and eighth All-American honor in the process while Rasmussen earned honorable mention All-American honors off the one-meter.
Bassham became the first Alabama woman to earn an individual NCAA swimming and diving title since Angelika Knipping won the 50 breaststroke in 1983. Bassham is Alabama's first female diver to win an NCAA title. The Moultrie, Ga. native is the second Greenwell charge to win an NCAA title. Brent Roberts won the NCAA Platform title in 1998.
