The University of Alabama women’s soccer team showed up in Memphis at the GSC/Fury College Challenge with a pieced together backline and they came away with a 2-1 record while allowing only two goals the entire weekend.
“We took a depleted squad to Memphis because of injuries and graduation, but I was extremely pleased with the way our girls performed,” said Head Coach Don Staley.
Bama dropped a tough 1-0 match to Memphis to open the tournament but turned around and got goals from Gillian Kilburn, Kylie Boyd, Courtney Cockrill, Allison Delisle and Katie French en route to a 5-1 win over the Diadora Impact U17 team.
Bama then knocked off Japanese College 1-0 on a goal from Rebecca Baker which was assisted by Cally Morrill.
“I thought Kylie Boyd and Rebecca Baker did a terrific job playing in the back and Emily Pitek was superb as sweeper,” said Staley. “Laura Lowman and Carly Carson turned in equally impressive jobs in the nets. I don’t think Carly allowed a goal all weekend.”
Alabama will take a couple weeks off from competition before hosting the University of Alabama Classic on Saturday, March 13.
