TUSCALOOSA, ALA - With the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships barely over, the Alabama Crimson Tide plunges into the outdoor season by hosting the annual Alabama Relays starting Thursday (March 18) at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium.
The meet gets underway Thursday at 9:30 a.m. with the first half of the heptathlon and decathlon. Those events continue on Friday starting at 9 a.m. The individual races start Friday at 5 p.m. with the women's 10,000-meters. Saturday features a full slate of events starting with the men's hammer throw at 8 a.m.
Alabama's women had two participants at the recent indoor national championships, sophomores Beau Walker and Aymara Albury, and both will be competing this weekend. Walker is having a career year in the sprint and hurdle events, having posted personal best times in the 60m hurdles, 200 and 400m dashes. Albury set the school indoor record in the shot put and is a threat to do the same outdoors. In addition to the shot, she will compete in the hammer throw this weekend.
Sophomore Beth Mallory, the school record holder in the weight throw will compete in the discus and hammer throw this weekend. Junior standout Tasha Pharr will see action in the 100m hurdles and the triple jump this weekend. The weekend will also see the return to action of sophomore Blair Davis who redshirted the indoor season. Davis will compete in the 3000m steeplechase, for which she holds the school record.
On the men's side, sophomores Chauncey Harris and Peter Etoot are coming off of All-American performances at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Harris has done nothing but improve his times in the 60m and 200m in the indoor season and Glance is expecting that to translate over to the outdoor season.
Etoot was the lone Bama athlete to compete in the finals at the NCAA Championships, doing so in the 800m. He posted a third place finish in the event in last season's SEC Outdoor Championship and a second place finish at the NCAA Regional Championship. He is currently the school record holder in the 800m indoor and will looking to claim the same title in the outdoor portion of the schedule.
The scored part of the meet, the relays, will get underway Sunday. The Alabama women will seek to defend their 2003 Alabama Relays title while the Tide men will be going for six in a row. A complete schedule of the weekend is available on www.rolltide.com.
