TUSCALOOSA - The University of Alabama men's golf team overcame a slow start and held off a hard-charging Jacksonville State squad to capture the tournament title at the Conrad Rehling Spring Invitational on Sunday.
The Crimson Tide, who held a one shot lead heading into the final round, carded a final 298 to edge the Gamecocks by two strokes, 878-880. Kentucky fired a final round of 292 to make it a three-team race on Sunday. UK finished in third at 881 due in part to shooting the day's low round.
"It was a great golf tournament that went right down to the wire," said UA head coach Jay Seawell. "I am very proud of how this group refused to quit. We got down early on Sunday but kept our heads and were able to come out with the important victory. I liked the way we just didn't quit."
Alabama's team victory was sparked by the play of senior Lars Brovold and junior Clint Provost. Brovold finished second overall in the individual competition after shooting a one-under-par 71 on Sunday. Brovold's recorded a 210 tournament total, just one shot behind individual champion John Holmes of Kentucky (209).
Provost earned a third place showing finishing with a three-day 212 including a final round 72. Provost made one of the best shots of the day on No. 18. After putting his drive on the final hole into the water, he hit his third shot to within three feet and made the putt to save par.
Sophomore Lance Walker and senior Austin Hynson tied for 38th for Alabama at 230. Walker fired a final round 78 and Hynson carded a 77 on Sunday. Max Alverio rounded out the Crimson Tide line-up finishing in a tie for 51st at 233 including a final round 83.
A pair of Alabama golfers played in the event as individuals with Dwight Rogers posting a 75 on Sunday to finish tied for 23rd (225) and Stewart Whitt closing with an 81 for a 239 (T-65th).
Ole Miss finished the event in fourth at 884, just three shots behind the leading trio. Kent State and Toledo tied for sixth at 887 followed by UAB (895), Georgia State (898), Notre Dame (906), North Florida (910), Tulane (911), Mississippi State (921) and Michigan State (923).
The Crimson Tide will enjoy a couple weeks off from competition before returning to the course on Mar. 29-30 at the Atlanta Intercollegiate.
