TUSCALOOSA - Saturday is always moving day at a golf tournament and that is exactly what the University of Alabama men's golf team did in the second round of the Conrad Rehling Alabama Spring Invitational, taking over the top spot in the team competition by shooting a one-under-par round of 287.
The Crimson Tide, playing on the familiar layout of Ol' Colony Golf Course, carded the day's low round with all five team members posting scores of 74 or lower. Bama was the only team to shoot under par on Saturday and their strong performance allowed them to erase a seven-shot deficit from round one.
Alabama has posted a two-day total of 580, one shot in front of round one leader Jacksonville State (581) heading into the final round of play on Sunday.
UA senior Lars Brovold and junior Clint Provost continued their solid play as the pair fired matching rounds of one-under-par 71 to remain in the hunt for the individual medallist crown. Brovold is in second at 139, one shot behind Kentucky's John Holmes at 138 (69-69). Provost is just two shots out of the lead at 140.
Bama freshman Max Alviero carded a second round 73 and finds himself tied for 18th (150) heading into the final 18 holes. Sophomore Lance Walker made the biggest turnaround for the Tide trimming eight shots off his round one score with a 72 on Saturday. Walker is tied for 33rd at 152. Senior Austin Hynson improved by five strokes in the second round shooting a 74. Hynson is tied for 40th at 153. In addition, Alabama's Dwight Rogers is tied for 18th (150) after posting a 78 and Steward Whitt is tied for 62nd (158) following a round of 79. The pair is playing as individuals in the event.
The final round looks to go down to the wire battle with just eight shots separating the top four squads. Alabama holds the slight lead over Jacksonville State with Kentucky and Ole Miss tied for third at 589. Kent State is fifth at 591 followed by Toledo (593), Notre Dame (601), UAB (602), North Florida (604), Georgia State (606), Michigan State (612), Tulane (615) and Mississippi State (617).
