Dwight Rogers is the newest addition to the Crimson Tide men’s golf team, joining the team in January after transferring to Alabama from the University of Florida. Dwight is from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and has a successful amateur golf background that includes finishing 10th at the 2000 Future Masters, golf’s showcase of future stars.
You're new to the golf team this season; did Alabama's tradition in athletics affect your decision in selecting this University?
“Yes, it definitely was a plus in choosing a school to transfer to. The school spirit of Alabama is fun. Also, although you're playing a sport, you can also enjoy the history that your school has.”
What University did you transfer from?
“The University of Florida.”
What is your impression of the University of Alabama so far?
“I love it! My mom is a Southern belle, so it's nice to be in the true south. People are much nicer here.”
What motivated you to take up golf, and how long have you been playing golf?
“I've been golfing since I was five, just for fun. I've been playing just golf since my junior year of high school. Both of my grandfather's golfed and encouraged me to pursue it.”
What's your major, and how do you plan on incorporating that into the career that you choose?
“My major is business. I'd like to play golf professionally, but if that doesn't work out then I'll have a degree from a great University. I'd like to do something with business and athletics in the future.”
What do you think are some of the strengths of the Alabama golf team this season?
“I definitely think that we have a bigger focus. We all have a new outlook on things, and we're working really hard. We'll continue to see progress throughout the season.”
What do you think will be some of the biggest obstacles for the team this season?
“In golf, there's always different things, like back injuries. Also, the weather isn't conducive to the health of the team. Health and lack of focus would be the biggest obstacles for the team to overcome.”
Currently, who do you think is the most influential golfer and why?
“Bernhard Langer, he lives in Boca [Raton], and I've spent a lot of time with him. He's been influential in my life from a spiritual standpoint, as well as golfing. He prioritizes his life in a way that I would like to.”
