When the University of Alabama men's basketball team traveled to Springfield, Massachusetts last season to participate in the Basketball Hall of Fame's Tip-Off Classic, the trip was especially fun for one Crimson Tide player and his dad.
That's because Ernie Brock, the father of Crimson Tide sophomore Evan Brock, is in the Basketball Hall of Fame, honored as a member of basketball's most famous of troupes, The Harlem Globetrotters.
Growing up with a famous dad who was famous for playing basketball has been a fun life for Evan, and it was only inevitable that he, too, would play.
In the following interview, Evan shares what life was like growing up under basketball's spell and who he is today.
Your father, Ernie Brock, is a former Harlem Globetrotter. Is he the one who got you started playing basketball?
"No. Basketball was on my own. He didn't determine what sport I played. He allowed me to figure out for myself which one I liked the most, so I decided on basketball."
Since your dad was a basketball player, how has he influenced your game over the years?
"He's given me a lot of pointers and worked with me on my skills and things like that. He's taught me the main points of the game and just given me his opinions because he used to play the game."
Earlier this year, Alabama got a big win on the road against Georgia in the final seconds of the game. Since you're from that state, was that win extra-special for you?
"I guess so. It was just another win. I wasn't really looking at it like that, but I guess it was good to beat my home team, and I know a few of the guys who play for Georgia."
In your past two years here at Alabama, you've traveled to a lot of places and done a lot of things. What's the coolest place you've been since you got here?
"This summer we went to the Bahamas and played. We were there for nine or ten days, and I think that's the best place we've been."
What's your most memorable moment of experience you've had at Alabama so far?
"I think just the experience of being here overall has been great."
What do you like to do when you have free-time?
"Anything that's fun. I just like to have fun. I like to go bowling, to the movies, to the mall, or just hang out with some of the fellas."
If you weren't playing basketball at Alabama, what do you think you'd be doing?
"I'd be playing somewhere else."
What do you want to do after your career at Alabama ends?
"Hopefully, I'll graduate with my business degree, and I guess I'll just see where that takes me. I hope I'll be able to get a good job and continue on with my life to the next phase. If it's meant for me to play ball, then I'll be doing that."
What's one thing that most people don't know about you?
"That I'm just a very fun, outgoing person."
