Alabama’s Robin Stephenson won the consolation draw championship Sunday at the 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Stephenson redeemed an earlier loss this season to Georgia’s Shadisha Robinson with a 7-5, 0-6, 7-6(7) win the finals. Stephenson lost to Robinson in the semifinals of the Southern Regionals on Oct. 24.
But Stephenson avenged more than just one loss at the Championships. In the second round of the consolation draw, Stephenson defeated Florida’s Jennifer Magley 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. Stephenson redeemed two of her five losses this fall at the Championships.
“Robin competed very well,” Alabama assistant coach Darryl Greenan said. “She was able to avenge two big losses against SEC opponents.”
Stephenson won three consecutive matches to win the consolation draw championship, defeating three players ranked in the ITA’s top 100.
“It’s a great accomplishment to win at this level,” Greenan said. “There have been some great players to win the consolation draw here that have gone on to win national championship.”
Stephenson finishes the fall season with an 11-5 record.
Stephenson d. Jennifer Magley (Florida), 7-5, 3-6, 7-5
Stephenson d. Lindsey Nelson (USC), 6-2, 6-4
Stephenson d. Shadisha Robinson (UGA), 7-5, 0-6, 7-6(7)
