Tide Has Successful First Day at Fall Championships

The Alabama men’s tennis team advanced three singles players and two doubles teams into the quarterfinals of the Crimson Tide Fall Championships on Friday at the University of Alabama Tennis Complex.
The trio of Tide sophomores Joseph Jung, Luigi D’Agord and Eric Molnar all won their first and second round matches in flight “A” of the singles draw to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday. Fourth seeded Jung defeated Wake Forest’s Todd Paul 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and then beat Colorado’s Jan Zelezny 6-3, 6-2. D’Agord, seeded fifth in the draw, beat Colorado’s Marko Bundalo 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) and Georgia Tech’s Zach Rath 6-3, 6-1. Molnar had victories over UAB’s Kristen Mitrovski 6-2, 6-1 and Miami’s Tim Krebs 7-6 (6), 6-0.
In flight “B” of the singles draw, Tide freshman Billy Mertz defeated Notre Dame’s Irackli Akhvlediani 6-2, 6-2 in the first round before dropping his second round match to Liron Strauss of Wake Forest, 5-7, 4-6. Alabama senior R.J. Murray also won his first round match against Richard Turner of Birmingham Southern, 7-5, 6-2, but lost to Notre Dame’s Yuichi Uda in the second round, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6.
Doubles play started off well for the Tide as Jung and Murray quickly defeated Wake Forest’s Joe Bates and Liron Strauss 8-0 in the first round of the “B” Draw. D’Agord and Molnar advanced to the quarters of “A” Draw with an 8-1 victory over Patrick Buchanan and Andrew Roth of Notre Dame.
All of the Tide will be in action on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
