TUSCALOOSA – For the second time this season and the fifth time in her career University of Alabama senior Erin Heffner was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week in volleyball by the league office.
Heffner, an All-American candidate and starting outside hitter for UA, guided the Tide to a perfect 2-0 record this past weekend with wins over Mississippi State and Ole Miss. It was the squad’s first SEC weekend sweep of the year and extended Alabama’s win streak over the “Magnolia State” duo to 22 consecutive matches.
“I am very proud of Erin and her play this weekend,” said UA head coach Judy Green. “She had a pair of solid matches and played very consistent both offensively and defensively. While Erin did post some impressive offensive numbers I think this award came to her because of her complete all-around play against MSU and Ole Miss.”
Heffner, who leads the SEC in kills per game at 5.76, averaged 6.67 kpg this weekend including a 25 kill performance against Mississippi State. She hit .351 for the two matches and also averaged 2.83 digs and 0.50 blocks a game. Heffner also had an extremely solid serving weekend recording 11 of the team’s 16 aces in the two matches including a career best six versus Ole Miss.
The all-time career kill leader at Alabama already, Heffner moved past 1,900 kills for her career and now needs just 77 more to become only the third SEC player to record 2,000. She also extended her current streak of double-figure kill performances to 35 consecutive matches.
Heffner and the rest of her Tide teammates will continue their current SEC road swing with a pair of pivotal matches this weekend at Arkansas and LSU. The Lady Razorbacks hold a one-match lead over the Tide in the SEC Western Division having topped Bama earlier this season in Tuscaloosa. The UA-LSU match is being televised live on Sunday by Fox Sports Net South at 2 p.m.
