TUSCALOOSA - University of Alabama head basketball coach Mark Gottfried is raising thousands of dollars for the fight against Cancer. On Monday morning at Tuscaloosa's NorthRiver Yacht Club, he hosted the Mark Gottfried Celebrity Golf Tournament Benefiting the American Cancer Society.
Among those who attended were Basketball Hall of Fame member C.M. Newton who was head coach of the Crimson Tide from 1968-80 and won three straight Southeastern Conference Championships in 1974, 1975 and 1976, Denver Nuggets assistant coach and former Crimson Tide and NBA star T.R. Dunn, and Jim Farmer, a first round NBA draft pick following his senior season at Alabama in 1987.
The cause of raising money to help fight the disease is a dear one to the heart of Gottfried who has seen first hand how cancer can strike anyone. While he was working on the Tide's coaching staff, assistant coach Robert Scott passed away from stomach cancer less than three years ago. And Farmer, who was Gottfried's roommate and teammate at Alabama, is currently fighting colon cancer. Alabama's basketball program also lost former assistant (to David Hobbs) Kermit Koenig to the disease just a few months after Scott passed away.
Crimson Tide fans are urged to make contributions to help in the fight against cancer and can call the Tuscaloosa chapter of the American Cancer Society at 205-758-0700 to donate to basketball's Coaches vs. Cancer drive.
