After losing his first singles match he played this season, University of Alabama senior Stephen Mitchell rallied impressively to win four straight at the UVA Invitaional, closing out the tournament Sunday with a three-set victory over Harvard's Chris Chiou, 6-4, 3-6, (12-10).
Mitchell beat Harvard's Mark Riddell (7-6, ret.) earlier on Sunday to advance to the finals of the flight A consaltion draw. Tide freshman Joseph Jung lost a two-set match the Chiou, 6-2, 7-6 in the other semi-final.
"I was very pleased with Stephen," Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. "He's matured a great deal and he handled himself well after being upset in the first round. His goal is to play a lot of matches and get better, that's what he's doing."
Next weekend, the Tide will send two players, Mike Green and Joseph Jung to the Notre Dame Invitational.
Mitchell will compete next in the qualifying round of the ITA All-American Championships (Oct. 7), while senior Chris Gostek will play in the main draw of the All-American (Oct. 9).
