TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Eli Gold, the long-time play-by-play voice of Alabama Football has signed a four-year contract extension to continue in that post through the 2007 season, Crimson Tide Sports Network General Manager Butch Henry said Tuesday.
Gold, who is in his 16th year as football play-by-play announcer with the Tide, has signed a contract that matches the extension recently given by the University to Crimson Tide Sports Marketing as Bama's multi-media rights' holder.
"With Eli and Kenny Stabler, we have a pre-eminent broadcast team," Henry said. "We are delighted Eli has agreed on terms through the 2007 football season."
In addition to his football play-by-play duties, Gold is under a multi-year contract with NBC as play-by-play announcer for the network and he now spends Sundays doing National Football League game of the week broadcasts on the NFL's new syndicator, Sports USA Radio Network.
A member of NASCAR's Motor Racing Network since 1976, Gold continues to host NASCAR Live, NASCAR's nationally syndicated radio call-in show, while also broadcasting selected races during the year.
"As I have said in the past, being the "Voice" of the Crimson Tide is an honor and responsibility I take very seriously and I'm thankful the University and our rights' holders have asked me to continue on," Gold said. "This will allow me to get an up-close look at the Mike Shula era.
"This will allow me, along with the Snake, to bring listeners along for what should be an exciting period in Alabama football. This contract will take me through my 20th season as Voice of the Tide, and trust me, when this contract expires, my plans are to begin my second 20-year run," Gold said.
Crimson Tide Sports Marketing is a joint venture of Learfield Communications of Jefferson City, Mo., and International Sports Properties of Winston-Salem, N.C. CTSM has been the University's multi-media rights' holder since 1998.
