NO. 1 OKLAHOMA VISITS ALABAMA
A historic meeting will take place this Saturday night when two of college football's storied programs square off inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Alabama Crimson Tide (1-0, 0-0 SEC) will host the No. 1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) this Saturday, Sept. 6 for a 6:47 p.m. (CT) kickoff in a nationally televised game by ESPN. The game will mark the first time the No. 1 ranked team has ever played Alabama here at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama is 3-3 (.500) all-time against the nation's top ranked team and has not played the No. 1 team in either poll since a 34-13 rout of then No. 1 ranked Miami in the Jan. 1, 1993 Sugar Bowl. The win over the previously unbeaten Hurricanes clinched the 12th national championship for the Crimson Tide. The OU game marks the first time Alabama has played a Top 5 ranked team at Bryant-Denny Stadium since No. 5 Tennessee beat Alabama 21-7 in 1999. In addition, the OU game marks the Bryant-Denny Stadium debut for first-year head coach Mike Shula. Handling the announcing duties for ESPN will be Ron Franklin (play-by-play), Mike Gottfried (analyst) and Adrian Karsten (sideline). The game will also be aired on the 80-plus station Crimson Tide Sports Network with Eli Gold (play-by-play), Kenny Stabler (color analyst) and Tom Roberts (sidelines) describing the action.
UA IN 109th FOOTBALL SEASON
The University of Alabama is in its 109th football season and has compiled a 755-284-43 (.719) all-time record in 1,082 games. The Crimson Tide played its first football game on Nov. 11, 1892 with a 56-0 win over Birmingham High School in Birmingham. Alabama and Penn State are tied for fifth place on the all-time victory list for Division I. The Crimson Tide football legacy includes 12 national championships and 21 SEC championships. UA has also logged 27 10-win seasons, the most by any Division I school. UA also ranks among the best in post-season play, holding the NCAA record for most bowl games (51) and wins (29).
THE HEAD COACHES
Alabama head coach Mike Shula (1-0, .000) makes his head coaching debut during the 2003 season. Shula has previously served as an assistant coach in the National Football League with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins. A three-year letterman at Alabama (1984-86), Shula was a two-time All-SEC selection and threw for over 2,000 yards as a junior (1985), leading Alabama to dramatic come-from-behind wins over Georgia and Auburn. Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops (44-9, .830) is in his fifth season with the Sooners, leading OU to the national championship in 2000 after beating Florida State 13-2 in the Fed Ex Orange Bowl. Prior to taking over at OU, Stoops was the defensive coordinator for Steve Spurrier (1996-98) at Florida and Bill Snyder (1988-95) at Kansas State.
THE SERIES
The all-time series between Alabama and Oklahoma is tied 1-1-1. The Sooners posted their first-ever win over the Crimson Tide last year in Norman, 37-27.

Alabama opens Southeastern Conference play Saturday, Sept. 13 as they host the Kentucky Wildcats (6:45 PM, ESPN) here in Tuscaloosa.

ALABAMA VS. NO. 1
The Oklahoma game will mark just the seventh time in school history Alabama has faced the nation's No. 1 ranked team.
*Alabama enters the Oklahoma game with a 3-3 (.500) all-time record against the No. 1 ranked team.
*The last time the Crimson Tide faced the No. 1 team was the Jan. 1, 1993 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, where Alabama routed No. 1 Miami, 34-13, en route to the school's 12th national championship.
*The last time Alabama faced the No. 1 team during the regular season was Oct. 8, 1977 when the Crimson Tide upset the top-ranked USC Trojans 21-20 at the LA Coliseum.

The Oklahoma Sooners make a historic visit Bryant-Denny Stadium this Saturday night, marking the first time ever that the No. 1 ranked team has played the Alabama Crimson Tide here in Tuscaloosa.
*Alabama has played six games here in Tuscaloosa as the No. 1 ranked team and won all six games.
*Alabama has outscored the opposition in those six games, 182-17.
*The last time Alabama played a game here at Bryant-Denny Stadium as the No. 1 ranked team was Oct. 25, 1980 in a 42-7 homecoming win over Southern Miss.

ALABAMA-OKLAHOMA SERIES
This Crimson Tide and Sooners will meet for just the fourth time in history this Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The UA-OU series is tied 1-1-1. This will also be only the second regular-season meeting between these two college football powers.
*Oklahoma won the first regular season meeting last year (Sept. 7) in Norman, scoring two late touchdowns to erase a fourth quarter deficit to post a 37-27 win at Memorial Stadium.
*Alabama and Oklahoma first met in the Jan. 1, 1963 Orange Bowl when the fifth-ranked Crimson Tide shutout the eighth-ranked Sooners, 17-0. QB Joe Namath rushed for 24 yards and hit 9-of-17 passing for another 86 yards and one TD, linebacker Lee Roy Jordan had an NCAA bowl record 31 tackles en route to winning MVP honors.
*The second meeting came in the 1970 Bluebonnet Bowl as the two teams battled to a 24-24 tie. Oklahoma's Bruce Derr kicked a 42-yard field goal with just 59 seconds in the game to tie the score. It was an offensive display from both teams with the Tide getting 428 yards and the Sooners, 415. Bama's Johnny Musso had 138 yards and quarterback Scott Hunter hit 13 of 26 passes for 174 yards and one TD.

*Alabama sophomore defensive end Mark Anderson is a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Okla. As a prep senior (2000), he had 104 tackles and nine sacks leading Washington HS to an 11-2 record.
*Alabama wide receiver Zach Fletcher and Oklahoma linebackers Lance Mitchell and Pasha Jackson were junior college teammates at City College of San Francisco the last two seasons. CCSF compiled a 24-0 record during those two seasons and won two California State Junior College championships and back-to-back JC Gridwire National championships.
*Alabama offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dave Rader served as the head coach at Tulsa University from 1988-99.

*Alabama secondary coach Chris Ball and OU tight ends coach Kevin Sumlin were best friends and roommates while serving as graduate assistant coaches at Washington State from 1989-90.
*Ball and UA offensive line coach Bob Connelly were assistants on the Washington State staff that faced Oklahoma last year in the Jan. 1, 2003 Rose Bowl. OU won the game, 34-14.
*OU defensive line coach Jackie Shipp starred from 1980-83 and was a first-round draft pick with the Miami Dolphins. Shipp is OU's second all-time leading tackler (477) and was a member of the Sooners 1980 Big Eight Championship team. The Sooners were 33-14-1 during his playing career.
*Shipp also served one year as defensive line coach at Alabama during the 1998 season under former head coach Mike DuBose.
*Prior to the 2002 meeting in Norman, UA's Shaud Williams was the only member of the Crimson Tide football team ever to see action against the Oklahoma Sooners and actually played at OU's Memorial Stadium.
*As a sophomore (2000) at Texas Tech, Williams ran three times for eight yards and caught nine passes for 59 yards in a 27-13 loss to Sooners on Nov. 18, 2000. OU finished the season with a perfect 13-0 record and defeated Florida State 13-2 at the Orange Bowl for the national championship. As a freshman (1999), Williams did not see action against the Sooners in a 38-28 Red Raiders win in Lubbock.

*Alabama senior running back Shaud Williams was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week.
*The Andrews, Texas native had a career-high 28 carries that netted 98 yards and two touchdowns. He also added five yards on two receptions.
*Williams gave the Crimson Tide a 27-17 lead with 9:51 left in the third quarter with a 73-yard punt return, aided by two key blocks from David Scott and Ramzee Robinson.
The 73-yard return was the first career touchdown by Williams as a punt returner. He recorded his first career three-touchdown game in the win.
*Williams eclipsed the 3,000-yard all-purpose yardage mark in his career against South Florida. The senior accounted for 32 plays, 177 yards and three TDs on Saturday. Williams' two rushing touchdowns matched his career high, previously set against Colorado during the 1999 season at Texas Tech.
*Oklahoma senior cornerback Derrick Strait has been named the SBC Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
*Among other things, Strait logged the 44th pass deflection of his career to tie the school record set by former All-American Roy Williams.
*Strait had seven tackles, including two for 11 yards in losses, in a 37-3 win over North Texas--defending Sun Belt Conference champion. He also broke up one pass and forced one fumble. The forced fumble came in punt coverage. OU recovered at the North Texas 24-yard line, and the Sooners' offense then moved in for the first touchdown of the game.

Alabama's on campus home since 1929, Bryant-Denny Stadium is one of college football's most scenic venues.
*The Crimson Tide has compiled an all-time record of 187-33-3 (.845) in 223 games.
*Alabama has sold out 61 of the 62 games played at Bryant-Denny Stadium since the stadium was expanded prior to the 1988 season, raising capacity to 70,123 fans.
*In 1998, the capacity was increased to its present size of 83,818 fans here at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
*The Crimson Tide recorded 56 consecutive sellouts (1987-2002) prior to last year's win over North Texas (Sept. 14). The UNT snapped the sellout streak at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

*Alabama's first game on campus was a 4-0 loss to Birmingham Athletic Club on Oct. 14, 1893.
*From 1911-28, Alabama posted a 55-2 (.965) record in Tuscaloosa. The 1929 season marked the opening of what is now known as Bryant-Denny Stadium.
*Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant posted a remarkable 72-2 (.973) record in Tuscaloosa, losing only to Florida (1963) and Southern Miss (1982). The USM game was the last game he ever coached at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
*From 1963-82, Alabama posted an NCAA record 57-game home winning streak.
*Miami has since broken that record with a 58-game home winning streak, but the Hurricanes record also includes three wins in the post-season Orange Bowl game. All of UA's 57 wins were in the regular-season.
