TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Lance Covan, who previously served as the Director of Leadership Gifts for the University of Alabama, has accepted the position as the Director of the Crimson Tradition Fund, according to an announcement today by Director of Athletics Mal Moore.
The Crimson Tradition Fund was established by Moore in the Spring of 2002 as a $100 million fund-raising campaign for athletic facility improvements, including the expansion of Bryant-Denny Stadium, renovation of Paul W. Bryant Hall into a state-of-the-art academic facility, renovations to Coleman Coliseum, the addition of a new strength and conditioning center and construction of women's soccer stadium and men's and women's tennis facility.
"The Crimson Tradition Fund is a significant initiative in the life of Alabama Athletics," Covan said. "These facilities will enable us to recruit and retain the best student athletes in America. The campaign's Executive Committee (chaired by Paul W. Bryant, Jr.) understands what it takes to be the best and works diligently to ensure success in this effort. I am truly honored to lead such a campaign at an institution so steeped in tradition"
Covan brings a wide range of experience in fund raising and development that should further enhance the Crimson Tradition Fund.
Prior to accepting this position, Covan served the past year at Director of Leadership Gifts in the Office of Advancement at the University of Alabama. As the director, Covan's role concentrated on top tier philanthropic gifts within UA's Office of Advancement.
Covan most recently served as the regional resource development director at The Salvation Army's corporate divisional headquarters.
In his position with the Salvation Army, Covan designed and implemented development plans for the organization in southern Alabama, the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the greater New Orleans area.
Covan has also worked with the American Red Cross and as director of international relations with the International Professional Resources for China, where he managed a team of 33 employees while living in China.
A native of Mobile, Covan earned his bachelor's degree in organizational communication from UA in 1993 and has also studied at Sichuan Union University in Chengdu, China and Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI).
He currently serves on the Board of Directors for several non-profit organizations and foundations.
