TUSCALOOSA - The University of Alabama volleyball team travels to Atlanta for the start of the 2003 season where the Tide will play in the Courtyard by Marriott Classic hosted by Georgia Tech on Friday and Saturday.
The Crimson Tide opens tournament play on Friday night with a 5 p.m. (ET) match with Coastal Carolina. Saturday's slate features a pair of squads that played in the NCAA Tournament a season ago. Bama meets Northwestern at 2 p.m. (ET) before battling No. 12 Georgia Tech at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
Alabama returns six starters from last year's squad that finished with a 19-15 record. The Tide has posted four consecutive winning seasons heading into 2003. UA is riding a five-match win streak in season openers and has captured a tournament title in each of the past two seasons.
Junior outside hitter Erin Heffner needs just 34 kills this weekend to become only the seventh Crimson Tide player to reach 1,000 kills for a career. This weekend will also mark the debut of senior Erin Price at the setter position. Price has spent the past three seasons as an outside hitter for Alabama.
The Tide starts the season with eight matches on the road before opening the home portion of their schedule on Sept. 19-20 with the Crimson Tide Invitational.
