Whew! 10 down and 3 to go! Today's practice was wonderful. As always, Kelley, Sarah, and I (joined by Heff today) went in early to get some extra reps in passing. After about thirty minutes the rest of the team joined us and we began our first session. For our warm-up, we did a drill where we had to get 100 overhead ball contacts in a row. Sounds easy huh? Yeah, but here's the catch, no one could talk (except me and I could only count the number we were on.) It took us a while to get the hang of it and then we began communicating by clapping our hands. It really made us realize how important communication is on the court. After that, we moved into some defensive drills and then onto passing and hitting. For competition we played a game centered around the middle blockers. Then after a few minutes of serving, Coach ended practice. When we came back for the afternoon session, we warmed up by juggling volleyballs! That's right juggling, and I was terrible at it, but it was fun and it beat having to do the zig zag drill! (take my word for it, it's BAD!!) After a few minutes we did arm warm up and then played some pepper. Heff and I were partners and we did a pretty good job of keeping the ball in play. For our competition, we played a game called 36 minute scramble. The game starts with 3 minutes on the clock. One team serves and that starts the clock. Once they win the sideout, they get ball after ball after ball until the 3 minutes is up. We did that for every rotation on both sides. Both teams were very aggressive and gave a lot of effort. To reward the effort and energy that we showed today, the coaches gave us the morning session off for tomorrow to let us sleep in, so enjoy your sleep girls, we deserve it!
Now normally I would be done with the journal since I have talked about both practices, but we had a treat tonight. Dr. Karr (a professor at the University who is a HUGE volleyball fan!) and his family invited us over for dinner. We had chicken, Boston butt, beans, bread, fruit, and I can't forget homemade ice cream. It was wonderful! We had a great time hanging out with his family and just enjoying each other's company. So thank you Dr. Karr and your family for having us over, we really appreciate all the support that you show! and the heath bar ice cream was the best!
In closing, I just want to say keep up the good work girls! 3 more days! We are almost there! and of course...ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
