Judy asked me yesterday to be the first to write in an online journal for the team. I was elated. I think it is a great idea for recruits, our families and of course, our die-hard fans!
Today was the first day of preseason. We started this morning bright and early with our running test...(insert Jaws music here), THE GASSERS! The feeling you get before running these is unlike any other. Not like before a big match. Not like before a blind date. Not even before your first day of high school. It is inexplicable, and in the past, this feeling has consumed every one of us. But this year was different. Everyone kicked butt this morning despite the early time (7:30 a.m.) and the smothering humidity. I'd like to congratulate Farley, Bibber and Cusimano for the pushing through to an all-time best performance!
The rest of the morning we had a team meeting where we got to know each other and went over the team rules. You may wonder why we had to get to know each other if we are a team. Well, we have a new assistant coach and five incoming freshman who probably will learn more about us returners than they want to throughout the season. We found out that Heffner chipped three teeth on the way to the chalkboard in 3rd grade and learned that Price had a "special" incident in a leotard...ask her later in one of our post-game question-and-answer sessions. Team rules went ok, but I'm sure anyone else would think we are crazy to do what we do for the love of the game. But it is all worth it.
We had a break before our first practice. I think everyone slept but the coaches. Practice this evening went really well for the first day. Ball control, ball control, and more ball control. But I think it made everybody's day to play some quads at the end. We thrive for the competition part of practice. Crystal got nailed a couple times by Farley, and I definitely saw some awesome digs and hustle that make me excited about this upcoming season. Something tells me that we will become a family and become the team that it is going to take to take this program to the next level.
Keep watching and waiting for what's next in Alabama Volleyball.....
Roll Tide!
