TUSCALOOSA – University of Alabama head volleyball coach Judy Green announced the hiring of Chris Redding as an assistant coach for the Crimson Tide program.
Redding comes to Alabama following a four-year stint as the head coach at Appalachian State University. A proven successful volleyball coach, his coaching career has included assistant positions at top national programs like Florida, North Florida, Pacific and Division II standout Cal State-Bakersfield.
“We are thrilled to add someone with Chris’ character, coaching background and enthusiasm for the game of volleyball,” said Green. “He has been a part of several national-championship caliber programs and I believe those experiences will be extremely valuable to us. It is also an asset to have someone on my staff with Division I head coaching experience. I feel like Chris is a perfect fit for Alabama and our volleyball program.”
During his four-year tenure at ASU, Redding guided the Mountaineers to three appearances in the Southern Conference tournament and a steady climb up the league standings. Under his guidance, ASU had several players garner SoCon Academic Honor Roll honors. His teams at Appalachian State also finished among the national leaders in service aces twice.
“I am very excited about joining the Alabama volleyball staff,” Redding said. “This program is definitely on the rise and I am looking forward to helping the team take the next step. Alabama’s athletic tradition is well known and I’m looking forward to being a part of it. It’s also exciting to be returning to the SEC. I believe it is one of the best and most competitive leagues in the country.”
Prior to being a head coach, Redding’s assistant coaching stays included a season at Florida (1988), two years at North Florida (1996-97), a year at Pacific (1995) and a pair of seasons at Cal State-Bakersfield (1993-94). All four teams that Redding worked as an assistant coach for advanced to NCAA postseason play including a Final Four appearance by the Lady Gators. Redding was also a part of two national runner-up finishes with Bakersfield.
“Chris is an excellent addition to our volleyball staff as well as our entire athletic department,” said UA Senior Women’s Administrator Marie Robbins. “He has gained valuable experience as both a head and assistant coach. He also has a tremendous coaching pedigree after having worked with some of the nation’s top coaches.”
In addition to his varied collegiate coaching experiences, Redding is an accomplished clinician and coach at the club level. He served as the Division Coordinator of the 18 & under Jacksonville Junior Volleyball Association and also was the head coach for the Gainesville Juniors and the Kern River Valley Club teams. He replaces former assistant coach Steve Walker, who took an assistant coaching position at Arizona last month, on the Tide staff.
A native of Rochester, N.Y., Redding graduated from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in health education.
