TUSCALOOSA – University of Alabama head women’s basketball coach Rick Moody announced the addition of in-state native Krystle Johnson to the Crimson Tide roster for 2003-04.
Johnson, a 6-4 center from Hoover, Ala., joins the Crimson Tide following a two-year stay at UCLA. While with the Bruins, she saw action in 46 games averaging 2.0 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. Johnson will sit out the 2003-04 season to meet NCAA transfer requirements and then will have two seasons of eligibility for Alabama.
“Krystle definitely helps fill a need for our team,” said Moody. “In the SEC, we need players that can provide us a physical presence in the paint and she is that type of player. It’s hard to project how she has developed the last two seasons, but I know coming out of high school that Krystle possessed great hands and good post skills including the ability to pass. I really believe that a year off from competition will be a huge asset for her in getting adjusted to school and our style of play.”
As a prep standout at Hoover High School, Johnson earned four varsity letters and was an honorable mention Street & Smith All-American honoree as a senior. She finished her prep career as the second leading scorer in HHS history with 1,364 points. Johnson helped guide Hoover to a 6A state title during her high school playing days. She was also a member of the Alabama Roadrunner AAU squad that earned a seventh place finish at the national tournament.
Johnson joins the Tide’s signees from the early signing period – Krista Watson, Tamisha Hamilton and Navonda Moore – as a member of Alabama’s 2003-04 recruiting class.
