MURPHY, NC – Krista Watson, a November signee for the University of Alabama women’s basketball team, died this morning in a head-on car collision.
Watson, the 18 year-old daughter of David and Pam Watson, was killed on Saturday morning when the car she was driving came around a curve in the road and ran head-on into an oncoming truck. She was on her way to her high school graduation.
“First of all our thoughts and prayers are with her parents in this difficult time,” said UA head coach Rick Moody. “I certainly share the hurt with her parents because my son just graduated last night and I can only imagine their pain. Any time there is a loss of life for a teenager it is a tragedy. She had all her dreams and future ahead of her, it’s like a nightmare. While this is definitely a loss for our program, right now that seems small compared to the loss for her family and friends.”
Watson, a 6-4 post player from Murphy, NC, was a graduate of Murphy High School. She spent her first three prep seasons at Greater Atlanta Christian School, and was a member of GCA’s back-to-back 2A State Championship teams (2001, 2002). Watson also helped lead the Georgia Metros AAU squad to a 3rd-place finish at the Nationals last year.
She would have been an incoming freshman for the Tide this fall.
