TUSCALOOSA – Each year the University of Alabama Athletic Department honors its student-athletes who stand out academically and through their work in the community.
In an awards ceremony held earlier this week, the Crimson Tide did just that.
Among the highlights of the annual event was the naming of the school's Bryant Award winners. Sponsored by the Tuscaloosa Alumni Association, it goes to the top male and the top female student-athletes at the University and is named in honor of the late Paul "Bear" Bryant. Senior basketball player Terrance Meade, a management major who was a four-year starter for the Tide and who also served this past year as president of Alabama's Student Athlete Advisory Board was the top male winner. Gymnast Kristin Sterner was voted the top female student-athlete.
Finalists for the women's award included Shelly Adamcik (volleyball), Katherine Bortenlanger (swimming), Judyth Kitson (track and field), Stephanie Leung (tennis), Jennifer Reach (softball), Amanda Tedder (golf), and Kim Zarzour (soccer). The male finalists included Williams Boyles (tennis), Beau Hearod (baseball), Kenny King (football), Oscar Lindvall (golf), Brian Rohrer (track and field), and Jeffrey Smith (swimming and diving).
The Athletics Department named its own Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year winners as well. Baseball's Jeffrey Norris was its Male Student-Athlete of the Year and Kristin Sterner was the Female Student-Athlete of the Year. The Top Six Student-Athletes of the Year awards, honoring the top six male and females, from which the two were selected included Kim Zarzour, Shelly Adamcik, Sterner, Oscar Lindvall, Terrance Meade and Norris.
The "Highest Team GPA Men" went to the cross country team for its 3.27 overall team GPA. And the "Highest Team GPA Women" winner was the women's tennis team which maintained a 3.56 group grade point average.
In the area of work done in the community, the university honored its top six student-athletes who have volunteered the most community service hours. The "Top Community Service" award went to basketball player Terrance Meade, football players Tyler Watts and Kenny King, soccer player Kim Zarzour, women's basketball player Beth Vice, and volleyball player Shelly Adamcik.
Three teams shared the "Top Community Service Hours" award for their time spent volunteering. Those teams included men's golf, women's basketball and soccer.
