TUSCALOOSA, AL-The No. 18 ranked University of Alabama softball team (28-13, 11-3 SEC) is on the road to recovery in the Alabama-Auburn series as they swept the Auburn Tigers (19-22, 7-10) in a doubleheader 2-1 and 4-0.
Gardendale pitcher Erin Wright (14-5) was the most valuable player of the day as she pitched the final 3.0 innings in Game 1 striking out five batters and allowing one hit en route to picking up her 13th win of the season. Wright turned around and threw a complete game three-hit shutout in Game 2, striking out six batters en route to a career high 14th win on the season.
In Game 1, Auburn grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Alabama responded in the bottom of the inning with Staci Ramsey leading off with a double. Following two quick outs, Lacy Prejean singled scoring Ramsey from second, tying the game at 1-1.
Alabama grabbed the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jackie McClain reached on a one-out infield single and was pinch run for by Deasy Phillips. Prejean then hit a hard liner that caromed off Auburn pitcher Janet Spivey over to first where first baseman Kasey Angulo made the putout but Phillips advanced to second. Emily Currie came on to pinch hit for Stephanie VanBrakle and promptly singled to centerfield scoring Phillips for a 2-1 lead and the eventual game-winning RBI.
In the nightcap, it was a pitchers' duel through the first five and a half innings until Alabama opened up the offense in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on two hits and taking advantage of two Auburn errors.
Jackie Wilkins appeared to have fouled out to catcher Deni Zeigler, however Zeigler was unable to hold on to the ball giving Wilkins new life. Wilkins took advantage and drew a walk. She then came in to score when Dominique Accetturo hit her first collegiate home run spotting Alabama a 2-0 lead. Capper Reed then came on to pinch hit for Angela Johnson and was hit by a pitch. Currie then followed with a triple to right field and later came in to score on booted ball by Auburn second baseman Lindsey Chitwood for a 4-0 Crimson Tide lead.
Currie finished the day 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Alabama and Auburn will close out the series on Thursday, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
