LAS VEGAS, NEV. - The University of Alabama men's golf team is one of 15 of the nation's better golf teams gathered here this weekend for the Toyota Men's Collegiate Golf Tournament, hosted by UNLV.
Play begins on Friday, March 7 with the first round, 18 competitive holes of play at Southern Highlands Golf Club. The second round is Saturday followed by the third and final round on Sunday. It's the second spring tournament for the Crimson Tide which opened spring play one month ago at Florida's Gator Invitational.
"We've had a few good weeks of weather to prepare for this tournament," said Tide first year head coach Jay Seawell. "Before we opened the spring at the Gator, in the weeks leading to it the weather was cold and rainy, so it was hard to prepare. But in these past three or four weeks, we worked hard and improved on some of the areas where we needed improvement."
The five golfers representing Alabama in the tournament include Lars Brovold, Clint Provost, Daniel Creel, Austin Hynson and Wesley Pate.
The field includes Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Augusta State, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas and UNLV. Georgia Tech is the tournament's defending champion.
"Eight of the top 10 teams in the country are competing in this tournament," said Seawell, "including Florida, Oklahoma State and UNLV. It's going to be a great challenge for us. But we need to play in events like this because if you are going to be the best, you are going to have to play the best and do your best. We have the opportunity to meet that challenge in Vegas."
Alabama will return home from the tournament to host its own Conrad Rehling Alabama Spring Invitational at the Capstone Club March 14-16. There is no admission charged to the tournament.
