UA HOSTS BIRMINGHAM SOUTHERN: Following last night's 18-4 win over the Belmont Bruins, the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team returns to action with a 6:30 p.m. game tonight against the Birmingham Southern Panthers here at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. BSC swept a double header from Siena yesterday in Birmingham. The 2003 meeting marks the third straight year these two schools have met in baseball action. Following tonight's game with the Panthers, the Crimson Tide continues its hectic week this weekend, hosting the UMass Minutemen in a three-game series, beginning Friday, Mar. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
THE RECORDS: Alabama (9-3) got back on the winning track Tuesday night with an 18-4 win over Belmont here at the Joe. The Crimson Tide is 7-2 (.778) here at home this season and has a pair of wins over ranked teams, including then No. 2 Rice. Birmingham Southern (8-3) has won six straight games, including a 4-1 victory at No. 10 Miss. State on Feb. 22 in Starkville. The Panthers swept a double-header yesterday at home against Siena, winning 5-4 and 16-2.
THE COACHES: Alabama's Jim Wells is in his ninth season at the Capstone, compiling a 380-155 (.710) record at the helm of the Crimson Tide. Overall, Wells is 572-244 (.701) in his 14th season as a Division I head coach. BSC head coach Brian Shoop has compiled a 550-234-1 (.701) in his 14 seasons on the BSC campus. The former graduate assistant coach and assistant coach under Ron Polk at Miss. State, led the Panthers to the 2001 NAIA national championship.
LAST TIME OUT: Alabama pounded out a season-high 19 hits, including seven doubles and a pair of triples, to hand Belmont its first loss of the 2003 season. The 18-4 win was the Crimson Tide's third double-figure win this season. Alabama scored five times in the first inning and added six more runs in the fourth. Adam Pavkovich (3-6, 2 RBI, 3B), Beau Hearod (3-5, 2 2B, RBI) and Grant Redding (3-6, 3 R, 3 RBI) had three hits each for the Crimson Tide. Jared Woodward (5.2 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) earned his first win of the year.
