JACKSONVILLE, AL-The No. 20 ranked (ESPN.com/USA Softball) University of Alabama softball team (15-9) got back on the winning path after dropping four straight games with a 1-0 victory over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (9-1).
Junior pitcher Erin Wright (9-3) threw a four-hit shutout striking out seven batters en route to her ninth win of the season.
Freshman Stephanie VanBrakle was continued her torrid hitting when she took a 1-0 pitch and hit her team leading third home run of the season over the right centerfield fence for a 1-0 Alabama lead. VanBrakle has hit safely in 14 of her last 16 games and is 6 for 9 with three doubles and a home run in the Crimson Tide's last three games.
While the top of the first was uneventful for the Alabama offense, it did mark a milestone in Alabama softball history as Jackie McClain's at-bat was the 11,000th at-bat in program history.
The Tide opens conference play this weekend when the team hosts the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
